Prepare Just-in-Case Notes
It's a heavy topic, but writing even a little at a time brings peace of mind. You can revise it as many times as you like. Keep in mind that this feature isn't a legal will. For anything that needs legal effect, such as inheritance or dividing assets, consider also making a formal will.
What is it?
A feature for leaving the feelings and important information you want your partner to have, ahead of time, in case something happens (such as an accident or illness). You can write in 12 sections in all, including "A Letter to My Partner," "Emergency Contacts," "Medical & Care Wishes," "Assets & Finances," "Funeral Wishes," and "My Pets."
The contents are protected with a password (passphrase) of your own, and normally no one, not even your partner, can read them.
How to use it
- View and edit them from "Just-in-Case Notes" on your user page, which you open by tapping the user widget on the Home screen. You can also get to your user page from the Settings screen (tap the gear icon at the top right of the Home screen).
- Choose the sections you want to fill in from the 12 and write freely (up to 10,000 characters per section).
- Normally, your partner can't read what you've written. Their screen only shows "Has an entry."
- (Partner's side) If the worst should happen, tap "Unlock and read" in "Just-in-Case Notes" on your partner's profile screen, then choose "Unlock" on the confirmation screen. You can read the notes right away, without the password.
FAQ
Q. When can my partner read them?
Normally, they can't. If something happens to you and your partner unlocks your notes from the app, they can read them from the profile screen without the password. Your partner can unlock them at any time, with no review or waiting period from the COUPPLY team. Keep this in mind.
Q. If I unlock my partner's notes, will mine be unlocked too?
No. Only your partner's notes are unlocked. Yours stay private unless your partner unlocks them.
Q. Will I (the writer) know if my notes are unlocked?
Yes. When the notes are unlocked, we email both of you right away just to be safe (at the email address registered with COUPPLY). If you don't recognize it, contact us from the app.
Q. Can unlocking be undone?
The writer can undo it. When your own "Just-in-Case Notes" on your user page says "Your partner can read this," tap "Make private again," and your partner will no longer be able to read them without the password. However, if your partner unlocks them again, they'll be able to read them again (we'll email you each time). Your partner can't undo it from their side.
Q. What if I forget my password (passphrase)?
You can reset it with the security question you set. If you've also forgotten the answer to your security question, you'll need to reset your passphrase, your security question, and everything you've written, and start over.
Q. Can I rewrite or erase everything?
Yes. You can edit each section as many times as you like. Tap "Reset" to erase everything you've written (your password is kept, since it's also used by other features).
